Week 3 Out (Oct 1–7): The Last Big Session

  • One full race simulation. 8 × (1 km run + station) at goal pace, or as close to race weights as your gym allows. This is your final check on pacing and fueling.
  • Set your splits. Put your goal time into the GridRox Pace Calculator and write down your 1 km run split, SkiErg split and row split.
  • Lock in your kit. Race shoes, socks and any gloves or knee support should already have several hard sessions in them. Weighing up new shoes? Read our Nike Hybrid RN vs Hybrid Fly comparison and best shoes for HYROX guide — but don’t debut anything new after this week.

Week 2 Out (Oct 8–14): Start the Taper

  • Cut training volume by about 20–30% while keeping intensity: shorter run intervals at race pace, a few sets of wall balls, light sled work.
  • No new PRs, movements or supplements. The fitness is built; your job now is to arrive fresh.
  • Book logistics. Confirm hotel, travel and how you’ll get to the venue (see below).

Taper Week (Oct 15–21): Hyrox Race Week Prep

Your HYROX taper week is about sharpening, not fitness:

  • Cut volume by 40–50%. Keep 2–3 short sessions with race-pace efforts so your legs remember the speed.
  • Sleep 7–9 hours a night. Race-week nerves usually cost sleep later in the week, so bank it now.
  • Two days out: a 15–20 minute opener — easy jog, 3–4 short strides, a handful of wall balls.
  • Fuel up with familiar carbs 24–48 hours out and cut back on fiber. Our pre-race nutrition guide has timings and portions.
  • Check your start time on the official event page about three days before your race, and plan your morning around it.

Training in Florida Heat: Don’t Misread Your Paces

The race itself is indoors, but if you’re training outdoors in Tampa, heat and humidity will distort your numbers right up until race week:

  • Expect slower outdoor paces. Running in the heat and humidity will feel harder at the same pace. That’s normal — judge fitness by effort and heart rate, not by pace alone.
  • Do your final pace sessions indoors on a treadmill or in an air-conditioned gym so you rehearse race-day conditions.
  • Train early or late in the day for outdoor runs, and hydrate before, during and after.
  • On race day you’ll sweat less in the climate-controlled hall than in your training sessions, so don’t over-drink before your wave.

Getting to the Tampa Convention Center

  • Stay close if you can. The Embassy Suites by Hilton Tampa Downtown connects to the convention center by skybridge, and the Water Street hotels are a short walk away. Downtown hotels will fill up for a debut event, so book now.
  • From the airport: Tampa International Airport (TPA) is roughly 20–30 minutes away by car or rideshare, depending on traffic.
  • Parking: there are several parking garages around downtown and the Channel District, but they fill up on busy race mornings. Arrive early or use rideshare.
  • Streetcar: the free TECO Line Streetcar links Ybor City, the Channel District and downtown — check the route map for the stop closest to your hotel and the venue.
  • Warm-up space: the Tampa Riverwalk runs along the waterfront by the venue, which makes an easy place for a short pre-race jog, weather permitting.

Race-Day Rules to Remember in Tampa

  • Don’t pour water over yourself. Even if you feel hot, aid-station water is for drinking only — using it to cool down is a 2-minute penalty.
  • Count your own laps. A missed run lap costs 3–7 minutes depending on the course layout.
  • Gloves and knee sleeves are allowed, but anything you wear must stay on from start to finish.

The full list is in our HYROX rules and penalties guide, and our race day checklist covers what to pack.
