The best HYROX outfits aren’t about looking the part — they’re about clothes you forget you’re wearing for eight kilometres of running and eight stations of pushing, pulling, lunging and throwing. This guide covers what to wear on race day for men and women, what the 2026/27 rulebook actually allows (knee sleeves, gloves, wristbands and more), and a simple five-move test to run in your kit before you travel.
The Three Rules of a Good HYROX Outfit
- Fitted, not tight, not loose. Loose fabric catches on the sled rope, flaps on the SkiErg and pulls in lunges. Very tight kit can restrict a deep lunge or an overhead wall ball. Aim for close-fitting pieces you can move fully in.
- Quick-dry, moisture-wicking fabric. You will sweat through everything. Polyester and nylon blends dry between stations; cotton gets heavy and chafes. Skip it.
- Nothing new on race day. Every item — shorts, socks, sports bra, shoes — should have done at least one full race simulation with you first.
What the Rulebook Allows: Gear and Accessories

Section 10 of the 2026/27 rulebook lists exactly what may be worn during the race: knee sleeves, gloves (not grips), a weightlifting belt, wristbands, hydration packs and prescribed inhalers. Then comes the line that matters most: anything not explicitly listed as permitted is, by default, prohibited unless the Race Director approves it. Headphones, phones and cameras are banned outright.
- Can you wear knee sleeves in HYROX? Yes — they’re on the permitted list and popular for sandbag lunges and wall balls. Knee pads aren’t listed, so they need permission.
- Gloves: allowed, but “not grips”. Useful for the sled pull rope and farmers carry handles. You can’t be handed them mid-race, so start with them on or carry them.
- Wristbands: permitted — a terry sweatband keeps sweat off your hands before the farmers carry. Don’t confuse it with your division wristband, which must be worn visibly.
- Shoes: closed-toe shoes at all times. The one exception is wall balls: once you’ve reached your target you may take them off, but you must carry them to the finish.
- Not listed: watches, athletic tape, running belts and some compression items aren’t on the permitted list. Ask your event if you’re unsure.
We break down every item, with quotes from the rulebook, in What Can You Wear in HYROX? — read it before you pack. The rules and penalties guide covers what happens if you get it wrong.
HYROX Outfits for Men
A typical men’s HYROX outfit is a sleeveless or short-sleeve top, lined shorts, socks you’ve raced in, and running or hybrid shoes.
- Top: a lightweight tank lets your shoulders move freely on the SkiErg and wall balls and runs cooler indoors. Our men’s quick-dry training tank top is breathable bird-eye mesh with no logos (note: Asian sizing, runs small — size up if you’re between sizes).
- Shorts: a built-in liner stops chafing and ride-up through 100 m of lunges. The men’s 2-in-1 training shorts have a liner and a zip pocket for training runs (remember: no phone during the race).
- Legs: knee sleeves if you train in them. Compression calf sleeves are a training staple for many runners; they’re compression clothing rather than an item named on the permitted list, so check with your event if you plan to race in them.
- Socks: thin, moisture-wicking and already tested in your race shoes. For gym sessions on turf, our men’s non-slip grip crew socks help with sled pushes and burpees.
HYROX Outfits for Women
The same principles apply to HYROX outfits for women, with two extra checks: a sports bra that’s secure through burpee broad jumps, and a waistband that doesn’t roll on the sled push.
- Top: a racerback leaves the shoulder blades free for wall balls, rowing and sled pulls. Our women’s racerback training tank top ($24.99) is quick-dry stretch fabric with a relaxed body and curved hem, in Rose Pink, Burgundy and Lavender Purple, sizes S–XXL.
- Sports bra: high support for the jumping and running. A zip-front high-support sports bra is easier to get on and off when you’re sweaty.
- Shorts or tights: high-waist styles stay put when you’re bent over the sled. The women’s 2-in-1 high-waist training shorts have an inner short to stop ride-up in lunges.
- Legs and feet: knee sleeves are allowed; calf sleeves fall under compression clothing (ask your event if unsure). For studio and floor work, our anti-slip grip socks are a training option — on race day, closed-toe shoes stay on.
Doubles and Relay: Should You Match?
Matching kit is popular in Doubles and Relay and makes your team easy to spot for spectators and photographers. The rules don’t change — every athlete follows the same section 10 gear list. If you’re racing as a pair, our Doubles guide and Relay guide cover the race-day logistics.
Test Your Outfit Before Race Day

Do one full session in your exact race kit at least a week out. If a strap slips, a waistband rolls or a seam rubs during these five moves, swap the item now:
- Overhead reach — ten wall ball throws. Does your top ride up?
- Deep lunge — walking lunges. Do your shorts ride up or dig in?
- Burpee + jump — chest to the floor and jump forward. Does your bra stay secure?
- Low sled drive — bent over with arms extended. Does the waistband hold?
- 1 km run while sweaty — any chafing or slipping socks?
Your outfit should also work with your plan. If you’re chasing a specific finish, see what is a good HYROX time for benchmarks, then set your splits with the pace calculator.
Venue Notes: Layers for the Walk In
Every US race is indoors, but you still have to get there. Bring a warm layer and a dry change of clothes:
- HYROX Tampa (October 22–25) — warm and humid outside; pack a dry shirt for after.
- Denver (November 12–15) and Dallas (November 18–22) — cool mornings; a hoodie for the warm-up.
- Anaheim (December 3–6) and Nashville (December 9–13) — December weather; dress warm for the walk to the hall.
All dates and venues are on the US race calendar. A layer like an oversized terry training hoodie is easy to throw on before your wave and after the finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear for HYROX?
A fitted, quick-dry top (tank or tee), lined shorts or tights, a secure sports bra for women, thin wicking socks and closed-toe running or hybrid shoes you’ve trained in. A good HYROX outfit is one you’ve already tested in a full simulation.
Can you wear knee sleeves in HYROX?
Yes. Knee sleeves are on the 2026/27 permitted list. Knee pads aren’t, so they need Race Director permission.
Can you wear gloves in HYROX?
Yes — gloves are permitted, but grips aren’t. You must start with them on you; they can’t be handed over during the race.
Can you wear compression clothing in HYROX?
Compression shorts, tights and sleeves aren’t named item by item. The rulebook requires appropriate clothing and lists specific permitted accessories; if you’re unsure about an item, ask your event before race day.
